Homework


Week 1

  • Read “How to Create a Believable World for your Characters” at https://thewritelife.com/worldbuilding/
  • Read one story by Edgar Allan Poe and two from any other author(s).
  • Get a library card and kindle account. Get the free kindle reading app for your tablet or computer.

Week 2

  • Read The Tightrope and write your thoughts about it.
  • Expand your Story World details. 
  • Create characters for your story world. Describe them in detail.

Week 3

Week 4

  • Find a flash fiction story and read it. Be prepared to share next week.
  • Write a first draft of your flash fiction story (around 500 words)

Week 5

  • Expand the college love story you started in class to around 500 words.
  • Write the second draft of your flash fiction story (around 500 words). Improve the dialogue, showing, not telling.

Week 6

  • Read The Sonoma Murder Mystery Were you able to solve the mystery before the end? If so, when?
  • Sketch out a mystery story. Use Scapple or a map to describe characters, plot and story world.

Week 7

  • Read The Old Man and the Sea (mine, not Hemingway’s) What theme(s) are in this story?
  • Sketch out your longer short story (1000 - 7500 words).. Think about your theme, characters, plot, conflicts and story world.

Week 8

  • Read The Devil’s Orchestra. How did choices change the main character?
  • Work on your longer short story. Add a difficult choice that your character has to make.

Week 9

  • Review the 20 and 36 plot types by Tobias and Polti
  • Work on your long story. Review how your story elements work. 

Week 10

  • Go back to your flash fiction story. Edit and polish it for sharing on the last day of class.
  • Continue working on your longer story.

Week 11

  • Use Duotrope to find a market(s) for your story. Make sure your story meets the submission requirements.
  • Make 15 copies of your flash fiction (shorter) story. Be prepared to share with the group next week.
